COMMUNITY NIGHT OUT

On Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010, the Alexandria Police Department and the City of Alexandria will join forces with thousands of communities nationwide in a celebration against crimes and drugs called the “27th Annual National Night Out”.  The Alexandria Police Department will be hosting our locally known Community Night Out “Growing Stronger by Building Strong Community Partnerships”.   There are thousands of communities nationwide and in other parts of the world participating.  Our focus is on the City of Alexandria and our community.

The Alexandria Police Department cordially invites you to attend an evening of special events planned and organized in a community crime prevention effort that sends a strong message to our children and community.   It is our goal to show the community what the City of Alexandria has to offer its citizens.   The Alexandria Police Department along with the Alexandria Street Department, Alexandria Parks Department, Alexandria Fire Department, Municipal Liquor Stores, Runestone Community Center, Alexandria Light and Power, Center Point Energy, North Ambulance, Douglas County Safe Community Coalition, and City of Alexandria Cultural Inclusiveness Committee will combine our efforts and represent the many different facets within the city to show a unified effort to bring the community closer together.

This event is an effort to build stronger community partnerships, as a result of some of these partnerships that have been built we have had numerous organizations and businesses come forward and contribute to the event.     The Eagles Lodge of Alexandria is sponsoring free hotdogs, Viking Bottling Company is sponsoring free beverages, Culvers Restaurant is sponsoring free frozen custard, Pete's County Market is sponsoring free hot dog buns, and Barrel O' Fun Snacks is sponsoring free potato chips.  Other contributors towards this year’s events are Target, Wal-Mart, Henry’s Foods, Paul’s Small Engine.   We hope you can attend our Community Night Out celebration and help make our Community Night Out a success.

It is hoped that the graduates will gain an understanding of the operations of the department and develop an awareness of the various challenges and decisions faced daily by officers of the department. Each student will be exposed to a variety of police topics in the classroom setting. Police subject matter presented includes some of the following courses: investigations, patrol tactics, drugs/gangs, criminal law, trial testimony, DWI, crime scene processing and others.

OPERATION I.D.

The Alexandria Police Department offers Operation ID. This is a free program that helps owners mark their property for identification. When a person signs up for Operation ID, they are given an identification number that is unique to that person. That number is then placed on their valuables to mark them. If the marked property is ever missing and later recovered, it is easy to determine who the owner is, based on the identification number. The number can be placed on the property with several different marking tools that are available to borrow from the police department at no cost. For harder surfaces (televisions, VCRs, metal objects, etc. we offer electric engravers. There are also tungsten carbide marking pens available to borrow. These carbide-marking pens leave a similar mark like the electric engraver, but operate like a ballpoint pen. There are also black light pens available to borrow. If you have property that you would like to put an identification number on, but don't want it easily visible, you can use the black light pen. The marking from this pen is detected when the surface is exposed to black light. If you are interested in learning more about Operation ID, have any questions or would like to sign up and receive your identification number, please call the Alexandria Police Department.
